So I've been going back and forth on this for months. I currently own a Veritas No. 4½ smoothing plane and honestly love it, but my buddy keeps insisting I try the Lie-Nielsen equivalent. The price jump is pretty significant — we're talking $100–$150 more for the LN.
My main question is: for someone doing mostly furniture work — hardwoods like walnut, cherry, and white oak — is the Lie-Nielsen body really worth it? Or is this one of those "you're paying for the logo" situations?
I've read every review I can find, but I'd love to hear from people who've actually owned both.

I've owned both for years and this is a genuinely interesting comparison. Here's my honest take:
Lie-Nielsen: The ductile iron casting is exceptional. Minimal flex, very stable sole. The fit and finish out of the box is better — you'll spend maybe 15 minutes tuning rather than 45. The tote and knob feel more substantial.
Veritas: Technically innovative in some ways — the PM-V11 blade steel is arguably better than LN's A2. The adjuster mechanism is smoother and more precise. You're getting more engineering per dollar.

This is the part people sleep on. For hardwoods like walnut and white oak specifically, that PM-V11 edge retention is noticeable. I did a full panel of quartersawn white oak last month and the Veritas blade outlasted my old LN by a solid 40% before I felt the need to strop.
That said — the LN feels better in the hand. It's heavier, more planted. If you're doing long sessions that matters.

Coming at this from a beginner's perspective — I started with a cheap plane, upgraded to Veritas last year, and I've been happy. For most of us who aren't doing professional production work, I'd honestly say the Veritas is the smarter buy. Put the extra $150 toward a second iron or a quality strop setup.
Save the Lie-Nielsen splurge for when you've really dialed in your technique. That's my two cents.
